Americans are worried about inflation, crime, groceries. So Biden talks with a transgender TikTok star
The 2020 Democratic contender’s latest video for TikTok, called “Gays Aren’t Men, They’re People,” is about the struggle against LGBTQ oppression. On Tuesday, Biden appeared with TikTok star and transgender influencer, Shiloh Ng. During the two minute clip, which can be streamed via TikTok, they discuss a range of topics. Here’s Biden, via MSNBC’s Chris Hayes:
“[Criminal justice] is not something that a transgender woman of color must put up with,” Biden says. “We know that LGBTQ people have higher rates of incarceration, higher rates of poverty, higher rates of unemployment and lower rates of educational attainment and higher rates of HIV when they have a gender diagnosis.”
Ng, in turn, says, “When one is transgender, it’s like the same argument that people who have gay parents have when they say they don’t want gay people to adopt.”
When the video concludes, Biden says with a smile, “Right. Let’s see each other’s T’s, huh?”
Biden, of course, is running in a presidential election in which LGBTQ Americans are already in danger. This is nothing new, of course. In 2016, Hillary Clinton’s campaign was beset by accusations of anti-LGBTQ bias. Back then, the video Biden references was by David Duke, the former leader of the Ku Klux Klan and America’s first openly transgender person. In 1996, before Biden was even a real senator, he made similar comments.
But Biden is only one of many Democratic candidates who has a connection to a man who is a public figure who has been accused of anti-LGBTQ bias. In fact, Biden and Trump are in the same party. And, of course, Biden is not actually running for president, but for vice president.
Still,
