Roger Federer and Ander Hsieh are back in Miami after a long absence

See Roger Federer share tears and laughter with CNN’s Michaela Rehman

“It’s a good thing for the future of the relationship, because he’s very nervous, we all are,” Fed’s wife, Pasha, said in an interview airing Saturday night on the network. Federer was asked about his father’s cancer, and how he would react if he were to fall ill and not be able to play. “I just think it’s a huge tragedy,” he said. “I lost the people that I love more than anything in my life.”

The couple will celebrate their second wedding anniversary Monday.

The Federer-Hsieh match was the eighth-fastest in the Open era. Federer’s next meeting with the American is Nov. 15, this time in Melbourne.

CNN’s Michaela Rehman has more on their relationship.

(CNN) — With a little less than six months to go before he comes to Miami, Roger Federer can relax a little bit. His father, Ander, has recovered in good spirits from a surgery that went very well.

And the Federer-Hsieh match on Saturday was only the eighth-fastest men’s match in the Open era — and the first since the US Open moved to Florida because of Hurricane Irma. Federer and Hsieh are scheduled to play in the US Open, which will be played in Miami from April 18-21.

“It’s a good thing for the future of the relationship, because he’s very nervous, we all are,” Federer’s wife Pasha, 56, told The Associated Press from the couple’s home outside Zurich.

“We both love Ander very dearly and are very happy to have him back here, playing tennis again. It was a very difficult night for him, but he’s feeling great and he has a very positive outlook on the future.”

Hsieh will play his first French Open since he was sidelined with a back injury in 2017. A return after two years of inactivity should be sweet.

“I think he’s been in great form and has had great results, especially against a very good player,” Federer said. “So a good way to kick off the year, and hopefully continue on the same level and hopefully for many more years to come.”
